Hands-on Bioprocess Training System Established
More Than 15 Customized Training Programs Offered

‘K-NIBRT’ (Korea National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training), established in Songdo International City in Incheon, has officially begun full-scale operations. The bioprocess training program, which had previously been conducted mainly online through Yonsei University, has now been upgraded with hands-on laboratory and practical training facilities. Songdo is home to Korea’s leading biotechnology companies, including Celltrion, Samsung Biologics, and Lotte Biologics, making it an advantageous location for biotech talent seeking immediate employment opportunities.

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority and Yonsei University announced on the 31st that K-NIBRT now offers a wide range of experimental and practical training systems essential for bioprocessing, including cultivation, purification, and analysis. The center is equipped with advanced training facilities that meet Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards for pharmaceutical manufacturing and quality control, along with an advanced bioprocess education system.

K-NIBRT currently provides more than 15 customized training programs. Major programs include theoretical courses for biotech company employees and regulatory affairs training, as well as practical courses such as:

  • △Antibody and mRNA process training for aspiring entrepreneurs
  • △Customized courses for biotech industry employees
  • △Specialized training in cell therapy and related fields

Specialized educational programs also include bio academies tailored for high school students and women scientists.

The city government and Yonsei University plan to train more than 2,000 bio-industry professionals annually through K-NIBRT. Programs are open to all applicants regardless of background or occupation, including job seekers, experienced professionals returning to the workforce after career breaks, biotech company employees, women scientists, and high school students. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

K-NIBRT is a national project jointly established by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Incheon Metropolitan Government, Yonsei University, and Incheon Technopark to cultivate professional talent in the bioprocessing sector. The center adopted its educational system in cooperation with National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training in Ireland. Yonsei University’s Songdo campus oversees program operations. A total of KRW 50 billion in national and municipal funding has been invested in the project.

Gyoonhee Han, Director General of the K-NIBRT, stated, “We have established a comprehensive system covering all educational areas necessary for training bioprocessing professionals, including research, manufacturing, clinical practice, regulatory affairs, and management. We also offer customized programs ranging from three-day technical training courses to 11-week academy programs.”
