2026 Hands-On Training on microbial bioprocessing
for plasmid and protein therapeutics manufacturing

Organized by the Global Training Hub for Biomanufacturing (GTH-B) in the Republic of Korea,
supported by the World Health Organization (WHO)

Training Objectives

  • The primary objective of this training is to cultivate the practical competencies required in the industrial field through comprehensive theoretical and hands-on education focused on microbial bioprocessing and protein therapeutics production. The focus is on providing extensive practical training in industrial-standard facilities, enabling participants from LMICs to gain direct experience and a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in microbial-based protein therapeutics manufacturing. The training also supports participants in applying these newly acquired skills to enhance vaccine production capabilities in their home institutions through strategic collaborations with the GBC and K-NIBRT, thereby contributing to the ongoing enhancement of LMICs’ biomanufacturing capability.

  • Day 1: Opening Orientation & Plasmid Construction (Cloning)

  • Day 4: Bioreactor Operation
  • Day 5: Cell Harvest & Lysis/ Utility & Pilot sclae bioreactor

Week 2: Protein Purification

  • Day 1: Protein Purification (Chromatography)
  • Day 2: Column Packing
  • Day 3: Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF)
  • Day 4: Filter Integrity Test (FIT)
  • Day 5: Protein Analysis

Week 3: Finalization (Fill & Finish)

  • Day 1: Preparation for aseptic filling
  • Day 2: Aseptic filtration & filling of insulin

Week 4: Bioanalysis for Quality Control

  • Day 1: HPLC analysis
  • Day 2: Microbilogical safety & environmental monitoring
  • Day 3: Residual DNA quantification
  • Day 4: Purity test (ELISA)
  • Day 5: Endotoxin test & closing
